Don’t Touch the Road Unprepared
Everything you need to know before stepping on the road this carnival season.
With two major carnivals officially around the corner and costumes already being collected, the countdown is on. Before the music gets loud and the road gets packed, now is the time to make sure you’re actually ready. A little preparation before hand can save you a whole lot of stress and suffering on Monday and Tuesday.
Costume Collection = Try-On Time
Once you’ve collected your costume, don’t just hang it up and admire it. Try on your costume before you wear it on the road…ASAP!
Ensure that:
- Everything fits comfortably
- Straps are secure
- Bend and frame your wire bras
- Nothing is rubbing, slipping, or digging in your skin
- Gems, beads, and feathers are intact
- Sizing fits and make any adjustments necessary.
Move around in it. Walk. Whine. Lift your arms. If something feels off now, it will feel worse after hours on the road. If adjustments are needed, get them done before Monday or Tuesday. This can save you from discomfort or a wardrobe malfunction on the road.

Your road bag is your survival kit, so pack smart and keep it light.
Road essentials include (but not limited to):
- A Handheld Fan & Sunglasses 😎
- Cash & ID
- Mini Sunscreen (the sun does not play ☀️)
- Mini travel wet wipes & tissues
- Hand sanitizer
- Portable Battery Charger
- Mini glam (lipgloss/ lipstick, powder pad, mirror)
- An Electrolytes or hydration packets
- Safety Pins
- Your Flag/Rag
Optional Add Ons:
- Mini deodorant
- Band-aids or blister pads
- Pain reliever or muscle rub
You’re on the road the entire day you want to be as comfortable as possible in case mistakes happen.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
Comfortable shoes can make or break your carnival experience. My personal carnival preference? Boots or sneakers: they are supportive, stable, and road-approved.
Don’t wait until carnival day to test your shoes! Walk, jog, or run in them months/weeks, and throw in gel insoles for extra comfort.
If you’re wearing heels:
- Choose a chunky heel
- Make sure you have proper ankle support
* I only recommend heels for pre-jump photoshoots but a few selective ladies do wear them on the road. Kudo to you!
Cute feet are great. Pain-free feet are better.
Newbies: Learn the Music Before the Road
If this is your first carnival, a little prep goes a long way.
Learn the season’s road songs and music you can whine, chip, and jump to. Knowing the music helps you fully catch the vibe instead of watching it pass you by.
Drink Smart, Not Reckless
Carnival drinks are flowing, but don’t hydration is key.
Remember to:
- Alternate alcohol with water.
- Sip electrolytes throughout the day (Or have electrolyte beverages: Coconut Water)
- Eat before hitting the road. (Some band also serve Breakfast, Lunch and DInner on the road)
- Pace yourself (it’s hours of movement and the sun is brutal)
Final Road Tips From Experience
- Ladies, get to your makeup appointments early!
- Stretch before you leave. Your body will thank you after hours of dancing.
- Protect your phone: a waterproof pouch is a lifesaver. (Especially at Jouvert &Jab)
- Stick with your section or set meet-up points with friends. Don’t get lost in the thick crowd.
- Enjoy the movement and dance freely.
- Be safe. Watch your surroundings and look out for yourself and your friends.
Carnival is all about freedom, joy, and pure vibes. Prepare now, so you can hit the road with full energy, fully ready to dance, whine, and celebrate.
